What is truth? In the most simple of terms: a truth describes something as it is. All truths are either objective or subjective.
OBJECTIVE TRUTHS are the way things are universally, irrespective of perspective. For example, the color “red” (without getting overly technical on specific color properties, or properties of light, etc.) is always red no matter what. Even in the case of physical maladies such as color blindness, it’s not the color that has changed but the perception or interpretation thereof.
SUBJECTIVE TRUTHS are the way an individual person interprets things or believes things to be, and can be voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary truths are a person’s beliefs, which are those things he has convinced himself are true. For example, whether or not one believes in God is a voluntary truth and can be changed with nothing more than the desire to change it. Involuntary truths are the way a person perceives things to be as a consequence of his nature. For example, the way a person interprets colors is involuntary, determined by his biology and can be changed if alterations are made to his biological nature.
The subjectivity of truth has no relation on the objectivity of truth, but a wise person is one whose subjective truths are closely aligned with objective truth.
Another kind of truth that can be either objective or subjective are FALSE TRUTHS.
Subjective false truths are things a person has accepted or believes to be true that are actually false (or believes to be false that are actually true).
Objective false truths are a little harder to explain. In short, they are unrelated truths used to indirectly teach objective truth to another.
To more clearly express objective false truths, I feel inclined to first speak on the ways in which we learn truth: directly or indirectly. Teaching directly is simple, as it only requires personal experience (and sufficient knowledge to understand the experience). For example, if I wanted to teach you what red looks like, I could simply show you something that is red. But if you had never seen red before, and if I had nothing red to show you, then I would have to resort to using unrelated things to draw your mind into the correct understanding. But even then, until you see something that is red and somebody who knows what red is can confirm the truth to you, your truth about what red is remains subjective. The unrelated things that I used to draw your mind into an indirect understanding of red are objective false truths.
This is also how the Lord teaches us, line upon line, precept on precept, here a little, there a little, until He brings us into understanding things that we cannot objectively learn in this life, behind this veil of darkness. This is why it’s important to not just read the same scriptures over and over but to read them all, from every faith, from every generation of time, and read them over and over again. And while you’re at it, go over world history — not once, but time and time again. If you do, I promise you that you’ll begin to see the mysteries of God unravel before your eyes. This I have a testimony of, and this is what I find considerable joy in: getting to know my God and His majestic glory all around me.
